What is recovery phrase and how do I set it up?
A Recovery Phrase is a randomly generated list of 24 words used to help you recover access to your Keeper account. If your account is currently configured to use a Security Question for account recovery, you can replace it with a Recovery Phrase for enhanced security.
Your Recovery Phrase does not replace your Master Password and cannot be customized.
When you sign in to your vault for the first time, you’ll be prompted to set up Account Recovery.
- Click Generate Recovery Phrase.
- Review your generated 24-word Recovery Phrase.
- Save a copy of your Recovery Phrase using the available Copy or Download options.
- For the best protection, write down your Recovery Phrase and store it in a secure offline location, such as a locked safe or safety deposit box.
- If you save a digital copy, store it securely and remove any temporary or unencrypted copies when they are no longer needed.
- Select the confirmation checkbox to verify that you have securely stored your Recovery Phrase.
- Click Set Recovery Phrase to complete the setup.
Important: Your Recovery Phrase is only displayed during setup. Be sure to save it before completing the setup, as Keeper cannot retrieve it later.
Best Practices
Your Recovery Phrase is the only way to recover your account if you forget your Master Password. Treat it like a physical key to your vault.
- Write down your Recovery Phrase and store it in a secure physical location whenever possible.
- Never share your Recovery Phrase with anyone. Keeper Support will never ask for it.
- Avoid storing your Recovery Phrase in unsecured digital locations or messaging services. This includes email, text messages, screenshots, cloud storage, text files, and notes applications.
- If you choose to keep a digital copy, store it securely and remove any temporary or unencrypted copies when they are no longer needed.
- Consider keeping a second written copy in a separate secure location to protect against loss or damage.
- Keep the words in the exact order they were generated. An incorrect or incomplete Recovery Phrase may prevent account recovery.
Important: Keeper does not store or have access to your Recovery Phrase, and Keeper employees cannot retrieve it for you. As a zero-knowledge platform, Keeper cannot assist with recovering a lost Recovery Phrase. If you lose both your Master Password and your Recovery Phrase, your encrypted data cannot be recovered.
